Qualitative Face Fit Testing
This is a less accurate, qualitative test that uses a sprayed solution containing either a bitter or sweet-tasting substance to check for leaks around the face seal. The wearer completes seven exercises while wearing a hood. If the solution is not tasted at any point during the test, the result is classed as satisfactory (a pass), and a fit factor of 100 is assigned. This method is only suitable for disposable and half masks and cannot be used for full-face, tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment. As the results rely on the wearer’s sense of taste, the test is subjective.
